Green Remodeling

Here at Rendon Remodeling & Design, LLC, we strive to make your home as efficient and comfortable as possible.  Using green building technology, we can accomplish this goal.

What exactly is green?  Homeowners always seem to ask this question and you may get many different answers.  Many builders claim to be green but are not very educated in the field of green remodeling.  We are separating ourselves from our competition by educating ourselves on green remodeling and the overall building science of a home.  We are in the process of becoming a Certified Green Remodeling Professional to distinguish our company from the rest.

The term "green" relates to being earth friendly.  Green remodeling relates to building a more sustainable home (another term you may hear related to green remodeling).  Sustainability is to make use of processes and materials that can be maintained, reused, or recycled for an indefinite period in order to reduce and eliminate toxins while minimizing the negative impact on the environment.

According to the U.S. Green Building Council, in the United States alone, buildings account for:
  • 72% of electricity consumption
  • 39% of energy use
  • 38% of all carbon dioxide emmissions
  • 40% of raw material use
  • 30% of waste output (136 million tons annually)
  • 14% of portable water consumption
This is why we feel it is our job as a home remodeler and builder to take a stand and educate our clients on the benefits of building and remodeling green.

When does it make sense to build green?  It always makes sense to build green, but the question is, to what extent?  You can make very minor changes that make sense for your home and is very cost effective, which will make a difference.  Or you can make more drastic changes toward green remodeling, which will make a big difference.  We understand that everybody has a budget and every budget is different, and that is why we are here to educate you on which route to go.

Some of the most cost effective ways to reduce energy costs are:
  • Replacing old windows with double paned windows filled with argon gas and Low-E coating
  • Replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorecsent bulbs
  • Adding insulation to your attic

Green remodeling is more than just conserving energy and preserving the environment.  One of the key aspects to "green" is improving the indoor air quality of your home.  According to the Environmental Protection Agency, on average, Americans spend about 90% or more of their time indoors.  Indoor pollutants may be two to five times higher (or even more) than the outdoors.  That is why it is extremely important to build a tight home that improves indoor air quality and has proper ventilation.

Many building products may affect the quality of your indoor air quality.  That is why it is extremely important to work with a trained professional in green remodeling.  Many building materials and furnishings may contain formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOC) which offgas over time in your home, causing poor health and a bad environment.  It makes sense to use Low or No VOC and formaldehyde products.  This is just one example, but there are many more sources in your home that cause an unhealthy environment.

The bottom line is that asthma, allergies, and more medical issues are growing every year and much of it is due to the indoor quality of your home.  Rendon Remodeling & Design, LLC makes a conscious effort to educate you about the different products out there that may be good or bad for you and help you make wise decisions to make a healthier home for you and your family.

We are extremely passionate about green remodeling and making the world a better place.  We go above and beyond from as little as recycling and donating items to changing out light fixtures, to designing and building complete sustainable homes.  Our goal is to contribute and make the world a better place, and we plan to do that one home at a time!
